18. King David

Half of the people have spoken.

Some praise the heavens. They’re thanking their Jesus that their leader won. They’re thanking their JESUS. The God-turned-man they fell in love with for being gentle, for feeding the hungry, for teaching. They’re thanking the one who chose to die before raising a hand against an enemy.

It is always a justification, without the just.

Some justify like Romans choosing their gladiator - “he’s filthy. But he’ll show no mercy. I bet on him, he’s my team.”

He’s already poisoned the water. The brain-eating infection has already implanted itself in fathers, in mothers, in lonely sons and submissive daughters.

Some justify for one reason: to save the unborn. They don’t know that to save the unborn, empathy must be the motivation of the leader. The unborn are saved in the classroom, not the courtroom.

Some justify by calling him King David, calling him anointed, forever tainting the view I had of the god whose heart must be so dirty.

If that is the view of the biblically-minded, God’s Chosen People must have shifted races. Russia’s leader? He couldn’t be anointed. North Korea? No, he’s not King David. Our leader is. He’s God’s chosen power. A necessary evil because it doesn't hurt me. The unrepentant master shirker of accountability. He is our Anointed One.

And the LORD said to Samuel, “listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you that they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.”

In the center of the stadium there is a man.

Just a man.

He is king for now.

The seats are half-empty, a dull chant droning can be hard from outside the walls.

The streets are fully empty; a mother’s quiet sob can be heard behind a closed door.
